SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The goal of the ALCC Academic & Scholarship Program is to assist students who demonstrate academic achievements and community service to offset some of the college or university tuition costs.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Applicants must be residents of Houston or of Greater Houston area. Greater Houston area is defined as cities within a 50-mile radius from downtown Houston.
  • Applicants must have acceptance letter to an accredited college or university or are currently enrolled in an accredited college or university.
  • Applicable programs: Associated Degree, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Master’s or PhD’s.
  • A completed essay of a minimum of 500 words.
  • Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Applicants must provide documentation of at least 10 hours of community service that corresponds for the current application year. Community service is any unpaid work performed in the betterment of the applicant’s community. Examples of acceptable community service: ALCC, school, neighborhood, nonprofit organizations, etc. Proof of community service must accompany the application by completing the associated form.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS CHECKLIST

1. Essay: Please type on a separate paper, a minimum 500 -word essay explaining how this scholarship will help you achieve your academic and career goals.

2. Official Transcripts: Provide official transcripts of your most current academic year as issued by the educational institution.

3. Proof of Community Service:Provide a letter documenting at least 10 hours of community service or complete the Community Service Completion Form.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

For 2024, the Board has approved a total of 8 scholarships to be granted to eligible students. Each scholarship amount is $2,500.00. Applications and associated documents must be post marked or emailed by July 30 of each year to the Academic Scholarship Coordinator (ASC).

The ASC shall be a non-voting member to ensure that decisions are solely made on the merits of the applications. The ASC will review all applications for completion. Once all applications are received within the deadline, the ASC will forward them to the Review Committee. The identity of the applicants will be withheld to ensure selections are made solely based on the qualifications of the applicants.

The Review Committee shall consist of one ALCC board member and 4 committee members. The Review Committee will review and evaluate the applicants' academic achievements, submitted essay and community service record.

SELECTION AND NOTIFICATION:

The Review Committee within 10 days of receipt of the applications will select the most deserving applicants. The Chair of the Review Committee will notify the ASC and the Board of Directors of their decision.

The Chair will also inform the applicants of their decision. The ALCC scholarship fund will be sent directly to the intended college or university, bearing the name of the recipient. All decisions are final and cannot be rescinded.
